Reasons Why Email Is Dead

On more than one occasion, I talked about why email is not dead and why the “marketing experts” who claim that email is dead or is going to be dead by a certain year are wrong.

But today, let’s have a little fun and do something different.

Let’s step into the shoes of the marketing experts and brainstorm some reasons why they’d say email is dead.

Now, keep in mind that these reasons I’m about to list may range from reasonable, to debatable, to outright ridiculous.

So without further ado, some reasons why I think marketing experts online claim email is dead are:

1. These “experts” are relatively young people who mainly grew up using social media and messaging apps.

2. They were victims of phishing email scams and are too traumatized to use email again.

3. Their inbox management isn’t so sharp and they’re overwhelmed by the amount of emails they get in a single day.

3.5. To add onto point #3, they probably don’t realize that most emails they receive are unsubscribe-able.

4. They’re surrounded by people who are obsessed with social media marketing and are trapped in an “email is dead” echo chamber.

5. They are impatient and don’t like the fact that people take a while to respond to emails.

6. They tried email marketing themselves and were disappointed by the low open rate results, which leads them to believe that most people don’t check their emails.

A lot of these reasons do sound valid, but they have simple solutions to them too.

For point #6, one thing you can do is to learn to write better emails. Emails that your subscribers will enjoy reading, but are still just as valuable, if not more.
